FN SCAR 17S – The One That Rules Them All

If you could only own one gun, what would it be?  A few years ago I asked myself that question and decided the FN SCAR 17S was the one rifle that rules them all.  If I could own only one gun, it would be the SCAR 17S.

I was doing well at the time and ordered one in Dark Earth tan for myself (shown above).  I put a Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10×40 scope (also in Dark Earth tan) on the rifle and had what I felt was the ultimate weapon system.

Why the SCAR?

1. Power – It’s chambered in 7.62x51mm (.308) so it has enough power for big game hunting and serious self defense – especially in the wide open spaces where I live.

2. Lightweight – It only weighs 8 pounds.

3. Compact – 16″ barrel with folding stock makes it easy to throw it in a backpack and head up into the hills.

4. Performance – The SCAR is built around the gas piston system.  I know that many AR platform 7.62 rifles, like the excellent Sig 716, feature a gas piston, but the AR was never designed for a piston.  The piston was designed around the AR platform which I think is “bass ackwards”.

I wondered about recoil with the short barrel and overall light weight, but it’s very manageable.  The muzzle brake makes it very pleasant to shoot – even during rapid fire.

After shooting AR platform rifles for the last 20 years, it was amazing to shoot the SCAR, field strip it and see how clean it was inside.  To an AR guy, the SCAR is unbelievably clean – which obviously increases reliability.

Of course, the downside of the SCAR is price.  It’s expensive.  But going back to the idea of just owning one rifle, it’s not that much when you really think about it.  Rather than owning 8 or 10 guns, I think I’d rather have 2 or 3 really good ones.  And if I have to narrow it down to just one, like I said, I’ll take the SCAR 17.

But…. I ended up selling mine last year to catch up on a few bills so I’m working on getting another one.  Life sucks sometimes!

My choice for a SCAR 17S optic would be the Leupold LCO & D-EVO combination…
